Traditional Ritual “Vadzhenne Suly”
About event
The traditional “Vadzhenne Suly” ritual brings together residents of Gadichevo and Markovichi on the second day of Orthodox Easter. It begins in Gadichevo after the Easter liturgy with ancient circle dances and games. Participants then sing as they walk towards Markovichi, repeating ritual actions at crossroads. In a field, they form a circle dance symbolising lightning and seed grain; small girls are lifted and tossed gently upwards with wishes for growth and good health. The procession ends in Markovichi with a communal Easter meal. The rite expresses hopes for residents’ well-being, a good harvest and protection from the forces of nature.
