Spring-Calling Ritual “Chyrachka”

The traditional spring-calling ritual “Chyrachka” took place in Tonezh on 17 March 2024, the last day of Maslenitsa. Participants welcomed spring with circle dances, folk games and ritual songs, offering guests duck-shaped biscuits. In local tradition, “chyrachki” are teal ducks, regarded as harbingers of spring. The celebration ended with the burning of a Winter effigy and traditional downhill sliding. The ritual is recognised as an intangible historical and cultural heritage asset of Belarus.
