Every self-respecting ancient castle is simply required to have its own ghost. In Belarus, there are enough such stories to fill an entire mystical thriller series. We share the most famous legends.
The Black Lady of Nesvizh Castle
The most famous ghost in Belarus is the spirit of Barbara Radziwill. She was secretly married to King Sigismund II Augustus, but was poisoned by her mother-in-law. It is said that the inconsolable king tried to summon her spirit but broke the rules of the ritual, and now the Black Lady wanders the corridors of Nesvizh forever, foretelling misfortune.
The White Lady in Golshany
The ruins of the Golshany monastery are shrouded in dark secrets. According to legend, one of the walls kept collapsing during construction. To appease the higher powers, the builders walled up the young wife of one of the workers, who was the first to bring lunch to her husband. Since then, her restless spirit in white robes has been frightening casual passersby.
The Lion at the Puslowski Palace (The Lion's Roar)
The Kossovo Palace was famous for its riches and the eccentricities of its owners. According to legend, the owners kept a real lion, which was released at night to roam the corridors as a guard. To this day, local residents say that at night, a muffled lion's roar can sometimes be heard in the empty castle.
The Spirit of Sonechka in Mir Castle
Sofia Svyatopolk-Mirskaya, or affectionately Sonechka, died tragically at a young age. It is said that her spirit still inhabits the ancient halls and the area around the family tomb. Museum staff and night watchmen have more than once noticed a light silhouette of a girl in a white dress quietly gliding through the park.
The Girl with the Dog (Krevo Castle)
Another sweet but sad legend is associated with a little girl who was inseparable from her dog while walking along the alleys of the old park. After their untimely death, their shadows are often seen together on the paths, and at night, one can hear the quiet laughter of a child and the barking of a small dog.
